Establishing healthy bowel habits is a great way to support your current hemorrhoid treatment, because although it takes longer to see results compared with drugs or surgery, it is the only method that addresses the root cause of the problem. Establishing healthy bowel habits is then a very important task when one is trying to get rid of hemorrhoids, as it will prevent the condition from getting worse.
Having said that, I’m going to share with you some simple behaviors that can usually help alleviate the symptoms of hemorrhoids.
Diet changes that can normally support a better piles treatment:
- Increasing the consumption of fiber foods by eating more fruits, vegetables and cereals. Increasing the fiber intake will make the stools easier to pass reducing the pressure on the piles.
- Drinking plenty of water. Dehydration and fiber deficiency will cause constipation which will make the condition even worse. The 8 to 10 glasses of water per day is a good guideline.
- Losing some unwanted pounds. Being overweight can aggravate your condition.
Healthy bowel habits you absolutely have to follow:
- Do not contradict the urge to go to the bathroom, do it as soon as you feel the need to.
- Avoid speeding and forcing the natural process of things. Let the stool pass naturally without straining yourself or holding your breath.
- Once you’re done, clean yourself and get out. Do not sit on the toilet unnecessary time.
- If you have access to a bidet, instead of using dry toilet paper, gently wash your hemorrhoids with water. Try warm and cold water and see what’s best for you.
- An alternative to the above tip is to use baby wipes. You can also use wet toilet paper.
- Use natural soaps without chemicals. The more natural the better.
- Always keep yourself as clean as possible.
Some lifestyle changes you can adopt:
- Try to avoid sitting or standing for too long as it will increase the volume of blood that flows in your hemorrhoids. Always sit on a comfortable chair with a soft pillow. Take short walks during the day as exercise can usually help.
- Avoid lifting any type of heavy objects while you’re trying to get better as this can increase the pressure in the veins and worsen your condition. If you do need to lift heavy weights do not hold your breath and make sure you keep your back straight.
- Do not wear tight clothes. Loose clothes will give you the ability to move more easily giving you more comfort. Stick with cotton clothes to avoid irritation.
- Take plenty of bed rest to release tension off of your piles. The horizontal position will create a feeling of relief. Try to give your hips a higher position so that the volume of blood in your hemorrhoids decreases. Just place a bolster underneath your body.
Some hemorrhoid pain treatment remedies you can use:
- Apply ice for 10 minutes, followed by another 10 minutes with a warm compress. Do this several times a day. If you don’t have a compress you can use a towel soaked in warm water.
- Fill your bathtub with 6 to 10 inches of warm water and sit in the water for about 15 minutes after a bowel movement. You can add chamomile tea to the water as its properties are very relaxing. Make sure the water isn’t too hot!
